Women’s Empowerment Fundraiser
March 7, 2014
ShaktiFlow hosted a Women’s Empowerment Fundraiser with all proceeds going to support the Women’s shelter in Edmonton, Alberta. The donations will go to WIN House organization that works with women and children in poverty, fleeing domestic violence which is currently affecting one in every four households. Nearly, half of all women in Canada have experienced at least one incident of physical or sexual violence since the age of 16. This is a staggering statistic and one that has been kept quiet for too long. ShaktiFlow, along with other Artists in the community, decided to give this cause a strong voice, and advocate a life free of violence, poverty, and stereotypes that limit both Women and Children to reach their potential. ShaktiFlow dedicates their performance to Jyoti Singh Pandey, the 23 year old medical student who was gang-raped and thrown off a moving bus in New Delhi in December 2012. Her brutal attack and agonizing death sent shockwaves in both India and across the globe. The song told a story of a woman speaking to her parents of the unjust pressures placed by society to determine her worth and the decisions of her life. Jyoti Pandey was just one woman who was a victim of rape and violence; as a society we need to stand for the oppressive behavior that is being domesticated upon both women and children.
